A bright russet she-cat bounded haphazardly across the streets of Penbrook, her wide paws bloodied from running on the rock-hard Thunderpath. A splash of crimson dripped down one side of her face, and one eye was swollen shut. Her breath came in ragged gasps, but Phoenixpaw dared not stop. It would be bad enough if Demon was hunting her; she'd seen the bloodlust in his eyes. But then again it would be worse if she had to face her friends. "No," she mumbled bitterly to herself, "Not anymore. Never again." She felt terribly angry, but at the same time a strange grief seemed to press her into the hard ground. It was a raw sea of emotion slowly eroding her world.
Finally Phoenixpaw slowed, stumbling her way into a cold, damp alley. Harsh yellow light glared from within the Twoleg buildings on either side. Feeling exhausted and comepletely, utterly alone, she collapsed and crouched there in the middle of the alley, as blood slowly ran down her face like tears.

((I think this chapter might be where Ghosty finally admits that he likes her... even if he isn't allowed to. ))
Ghostpaw had left the warehouse, and was returning through Penbrook in a direction somewhat towards what was now his home. Not following anything in particular, he was thinking about everything that had happened. Rocky had been attacked, and then left, to pursue his own fates. And then Ghostpaw himself left, because he needed to be alone. No, not alone, with the only cat that he knew would be his friend through everything, and even though he didn't consciously know he was following her scent, he was.
He turned in an alley, pain throbbing in the various cuts on his body, but that wasn't important when he saw Phoenixpaw. She had just collapsed and crouched on the ground, and was still actively bleeding. He trotted towards her, hesitating for a moment in case she wanted to be alone, but he felt that wasn't quite the case, and so crouched beside her, briefly licking the blood off her head before turning his head to stare into the distance, in the direction Rocky had gone.

(( YAY XDD I think she likes him too. ))
Phoenixpaw was jolted out of her silent reverie when she felt Ghostpaw's tongue brush her cheek. She raised her eyes to see him gazing off past the Twoleg houses. "Just go with them," she growled dully. "Your friends will be missing you." The orange eyes that usually burned defiantly were glassy and as flat as her voice.

((How best to go about them admitting it? owO She's a meddie apprentice.))
Ghostpaw watched the horizon as the sunrise heightened. He saw a flash of fur, and then another, indicating that Duskhaze and Shellpaw had gone home. Glad not to have to think about them, he glanced at Phoenixpaw, shaking his head a little. "Sure, they're friends, but you're my best friend, not them." He felt a little self-conscious, possibly for the first time in his life. Here I am, little ole me, next to the prettiest cat I know... He grinned to himself, in spite of it all. "They can go back to the Clan, that's all good and well, but I'm not going back without you, Phoenixpaw." He hesitated for a moment, then pressed himself to her side.

(( Eh . . We'll figure something out. XDD ))
Phoenixpaw bristled in alarm as she felt his pelt brushed hers. She hurriedly jerked away and snapped, "I don't care, that doesn't mean you can get all cuddly!" She pointedly turned her head away, hoping her expression hadn't betrayed her feelings.

Ghostpaw had a few seconds in which his mind and heart were racing, when Phoenixpaw jerked away, and his reflexes caught him before he fell onto the cold and damp ground. His long white fur was mussed from brushing against hers, so in a sheepish attempt to cover his embarassment at her seeming rejection, he groomed his pelt. There were still a couple of burrs from the first journey from the forest, so he picked those out, being careful and meticulous with his pelt. He had never taken to grooming himself, always more on the explorative side, but now he felt that same uneasy self-consciousness, and tried to ignore the fact that she had brusquely turned her head away. He was, of course, oblivious to the fact that she felt the same, thinking instead that she was just in a crabby mood and frustrated at him for following her.

(( XDD Don't ask me why Phoenixpaw likes him; it goes against all laws of her personality. O.o ))
In a gentler, almost guilty voice, she continued, "Look, I'm sorry, but I can't go back. JungleClan doesn't need me and I'm sure Shellpaw wouldn't mind helping Dawnleaf until she finds a new apprentice." Phoenixpaw stood up. Her fur was ruffled and blood-splattered but she didn't seem to notice. The blood was beginning to clot around her face, forming some sort of sinister half-mask. "Besides, there's something I need to do."

(('Cuz he was the guy what saved her from wandering around in the forest and broke through the first mean-ness shell...))
Ghostpaw's baby-blue eyes scrutinized her for a moment before he replied, "JungleClan needs you even more than it needs me. I'm just an apprentice, what can I do that's important? But you're a medicine cat apprentice. You help cats that are in need. I know that's a big burden to hold, but some cat's gotta do it, and you remember that signs were sent by StarClan to tell you that it's you that was chosen." He felt only sadness that the blood was clotting on her face, that her pretty ginger muzzle was coated in the slick red liquid.
"Wherever you go, I go with you. Remember how I came into the Clan with you? I can't go back without you. Whatever you're going to do, I have to help you because..." He took a deep breath to steady his nerves. "Because, Phoenixpaw, I think I like you, a lot."

(( Yeah, something like that. XDD )) Phoenixpaw looked at him levelly. "You'll be a warrior very soon. If anything you've already proved your worth by going on this trip. You're so confident about me, but . .." She took a breath, not sure how Ghostpaw would react. "I have my doubts about StarClan's existence. Everything the Clan cats did to make themselves what they are today was done by them, not a bunch of spirits. They certainly didn't do anything to help us today. When cats die, they're dead. End of story." She had begun to walk away, but at his last words, she half-turned, her eyes once again masked with cold indifference. "Sorry, Ghostpaw. It's bad enough we became friends in the first place. But I don't want to love someone again."
(( XDD Sorry, the rejection is only temporary. It goes along with her story. ))

((No worries XDD poor Ghosty.))
Ghostpaw listened to her speak about StarClan, and his mouth was opened in shock. Not believe in StarClan? "I... I don't want to be a warrior without you!" He backed up a few steps, looking pleadingly at her, and when she stopped and added to her words, he felt as though he had been struck by either the meanest badger alive or a bear. "I don't know you..." He whispered in shock, and spun, pelting back to the JungleClan territory without thinking.

(( He doesn't wanna hear the rest of her story? XD How rude of him. ))
Phoenixpaw felt something icy squeeze heart. She bit her tongue to keep from crying out. Sadly, her fire-orange eyes watched Ghostpaw's fast-retreating figure. Then, without a backward glance, she slipped out of the alley and continued toward the bridge. A large Twoleg nest was on the other side.

Moving with a nervous, jumpy stride, Phoenixpaw crossed the old stone bridge a bit quicker than was necessary. Oddly enough, there were no Twolegs present, or even any other cats. She felt even more alone than ever. Taking a deep breath, she pushed any guilty feelings deep back in her mind, to better concentrate on her task ahead.
In a small patch of scraggly weeds growing by the road, Phoenixpaw stopped, looking down at the plants. Despite it being leaf-bare, a pale, delicate pink flower was sprouting from the cold, hard earth. With utmost care, Phoenixpaw plucked the flower from the surrounding plants and moved on. The grand Twoleg nest seemed to dominate her vision. There were many windows, all of them with curtains drawn. Phoenixpaw did not stop but went around to the back, where a small balcony with potted plants jutted out a few foxlengths above the ground. Below the balcony there was a small mound of earth with a few polished stones surrounding it. Slowly, carefully, Phoenixpaw placed the tiny flower on top of the mound and pressed the stem into the dirt with her paws. Maybe this year, the beautiful little flowers would sprout on his grave, come new-leaf. Phoenixpaw closed her eyes as she huddled next to the lonely grave. She forgot the pain and exhaustion in her body as she thought back to that day.
A young she-cat bounded out onto the stone balcony, her dark ginger coat fluffed up with excitement and her orange eyes shining. She wasn't more than a year old, yet there was usually a dark, brooding air of maturity about her. Not on this sunny day. Today, she was simply a young cat just out of kittenhood. "Shadow!" Her yowl rang out through the air. "Shadow, are you there? You said you had a surprise for me! Shadow!" She broke off as a lean tomcat, not much older than she, came bounding out from the trees across the way. He carried something in his jaws. Although the balcony was higher than an average cat's leap, he easily made it, squeezing through the narrow metal bars. His thick fur was pale ivory, with darker tones on his legs, face, and tail. Smoky blue eyes gleamed as he looked down at his friend. The item he carried happened to be a flower -- soft and delicate, with pale pink petals. "I brought this for you, Phoenix." he purred to his friend, dropping his gift at her paws. "You told me how you enjoyed flowers." Phoenix beamed a cheerful smile. "Thanks, Shadow," she meowed, rubbing her cheek against his, "But as long as you're my best friend I don't need anything else." Suddenly Shadow's head twisted around, eyes narrowed. The air was silent, and deathly still. "Stay here," Shadow commanded, leaping down from the balcony. As he landed, four tomcats emerged from the trees. Three were dark-coloured tabby toms, but the leading cat was truly impressive, with white fur and blood-red patches on his points. The group approached Shadow, and the apparent leader stepped forward. Phoenix could see that his eyes were slate-grey, laced with deadly scarlet. "We've been watching you, Shadow." His voice was velvety, but dagger-edged. "You will be a valuable addition to my group. You know that, don't you?" Shadow bristled and spat, "I know what you're planning, and I refuse to be come one of your killers. So forget it, Twilight." The tom he'd called Twilight narrowed his eyes and snarled, "I'm am not Twilight. I am Demon!" He unsheathed his claws, which shone an uncanny silver. But before he could strike, Shadow lashed out first. His sharp talons scored a single line from the tip of Demon's right ear to the bottom left of his jaw. The three toms pounced, pinning Shadow to the ground. Demon screeched, and retaliated with surprising speed. Before Phoenix realized what was happening, Shadow lay in a pool of blood and the three cats had disappeared. Phoenix scrambled down onto the grass. "Shadow!" She wailed, her eyes wide and frightened. "Shadow, please . . .!" The only reply she got was a blank stare from glassy blue eyes. And as she had cried helplessly and begged her friend to get up, far-off clouds had gathered and it started to rain.

((Lufferly! Poor Phoenix D:))
The white-and-gray apprentice had torn through the JungleClan turf like a tornado. Seems I've been doing a lot of that lately! But he knew what a terrible mistake he had made, and wanted to find Phoenixpaw and make sure she was alright, or he could never live with himself. Putting to use all of the training he had ever had, he checked the scent, almost immediately catching hers.
He followed the scent, all the way across the Twolegs bridge. He was walking, and a deep sorrow, more than he had ever felt, filled him. Following Phoenixpaw's scent around a Twolegs building, he peered around the corner to see her huddle next to a mound of soil, her eyes closed. Something in him urged him to go over to her, but then there was the little voice that told him to stay put, that pain after she rejected him.
After a couple of moments, the first instinct won over, and he padded over silently, to where the medicine cat apprentice was. He pressed against her comfortingly, for a cool mist had covered the ground. If one had been looking at Ghostpaw, he would really have looked like his namesake in the mist, a fleeting shadow. Still crouched at her side, he wished the moment would never end, but prepared for her wrath once she awoke.
((I think... I just got an evil idea. I think I'm going to kill off Ghosty, but she can talk to him in StarClan since she's a meddie apprentice.))

(( . . . . You ARE evil. We could have Xiral [ebil foxeh] kill him. ))
Phoenixpaw's eyes cracked open, narrow orange slits. The first thing she saw was the clear blue eyes, shrouded in the chilling mist. Her thick fur bristled in alarm. "Shadow . . ? No way! Shadow, you're dead! DEAD! You died, I saw you!" Her voice rose in a disoriented shriek and she scrambled away from Ghostpaw, almost slamming into the side of the Twolegs' nest.
