The apprentice was still running, and his lungs felt as though they were on fire, burning with the pain he felt. It wasn't just from running, it was from being rejected. How... why? That can't have been Phoenixpaw back there, it's not possible! Some evil demon has taken her place... Without stopping even when the thorns and brambles whipped by, tearing cuts into his side, he skidded to a halt in front of Frog Lake, completely winded.
Panting, he stood staring at the algae-covered water's edge, crystalline-blue eyes seeing nothing but the horror of the scene that had just played out. Seeing and hearing Phoenixpaw tell him that she didn't believe in StarClan, and that she didn't even want to be friends with him... But I love her too much. I won't ever see her again if- His train of thought was interrupted by what he had promised, that he would go with her no matter where she went, and watch over her if he had to. I promised I would, and I will, after I've had some time to let it settle... Without warning, Ghostpaw flung himself into the water, treading the algae surrounding him.

After leaving the cool water and curling up on the shore, still soaking wet, he decided that maybe it wouldn't hurt to shake out his drenched coat, considering his fur was long. Standing and shaking the frigidness out of his limbs and the liquid from his pelt, he groomed himself with long strokes of his pink tongue until he was mostly dry. Then, he curled up under a tree.
Blinking the sleep out of his bright blue eyes, he looked up, and realized he was back in his old Twolegs home, in the woven basket on top of a cushion. It was filled with down; his owner, a young female Twolegs, kept care of him well. She was kind to him, and stroked him kindly when he came to her legs, purring. But she didn't notice the gleam in his eyes when he looked over the fence, into the woods beyond, the thick growths of trees and wildlife. He had caught mice ever since he was a kit, quickly learning not to bring them back to the Twolegs, for they would never understand.
He stood and stretched, yawning. The young female Twolegs was nowhere in sight, but the older one was. She opened the door and allowed Ghost to leave the house. He stopped on the walkway outside, suddenly aware of where he was. He was not a kittypet! He was a JungleClan apprentice! What was going on? Then suddenly he knew something was wrong, something terribly wrong, and began runing faster than he ever had before...
Jerking awake suddenly, Ghostpaw's paws twitched, and he realized suddenly what was so wrong. He had left Phoenixpaw there, in the Twolegplace. What if they caught her and took her away? She may have rejected me, but I will always love her, and I'd rather die than see her taken away by Twolegs! Gripping the soil with his claws and tearing himself up, he took off, practically in flight as he ran back to where he left Phoenixpaw.
