"Blackpaw . . . passed." She had known how rough the currents were, but had gone out anyway. That had been his final test. Her jaws gave a last twitch, and her fierce yellow eyes were blank and unfocused, gazing up at the cloudy sky she could no longer see.

"Passed?" A confused expression flew across Blackpaw's face as tears welled up in his eyes. "Come on Blackpatch, please don't leave." His voice cracked as disbelief crossed across his face. "No...no...NO!" He yowled as he tore himself away from Leafsong and Blackpatch, tears streamed down his pained face as he ran through the brush. The branches lashed out at his face as he ran blindly through the island.
Blackpaw stopped when he felt water begin to soak his paws, and he opened his eyes slowly. The water covered his black paws as he strained a straight face, but his eyes glared with pain and hatred as he looked over the dark water. He began to walk out slowly into the water, letting it lick his belly and splash into his face. Then he turned his gaze up towards the sky, as he let out a strangled snarl. "Why? She didn't deserve this! If anyone did I should have been the one..."

Nightpaw nodded.He crouched again,preparing to attack. Ringtail paused as he pricked his ears. "Did you hear something?" He looked out towards Big Claw Island. "I could've sworn . . ." For some reason, he started feeling uneasy. "Well, we've finished our patrol," he said to Nightpaw suddenly. "Let's go." He whirled and whisked out of the trees, heading for the beach. |

Ringtail splashed into the water, but jumped back when the currents almost swept him off his paws. He scrambled back up to the beach, shaking water off his feet. "Well, that's no good," he muttered. "No cat could swim in that." He looked out towards the island nervously.

"Normally, we can swim to the island easily," Ringtail explained. But at this time, around leaf-fall, the currents start getting really rough. I'm worried about them; Blackpatch should have known better."

Blackpaw could feel tears stream down his cheeks as he closed his eyes tightly. He began to blindly walk out into the water, his body was soon engulfed by water and began to be tugged out into the dark deeps of the ocean. "Just pull me under to where I won't be able to see daylight again." He seemed to whisper to waves as his dark head was pulled under. He could feel the currents rip and tug at his body, as if they were trying to tear him into a pieces. But slowly the currents began to even out, and he almost snarled because of this.
'So, I'm not allowed to die now? Even though my clanmate died before my eyes in these dark waters? Starclan, why are you keeping me alive?' He whispered in the depths of his thoughts as a current tugged and pulled again, before thrashing him up onto shore, back onto Islandclan's main territory. "Why?" He gasped slowly as his eyes opened then closed as he fell into the dark deepths of his mind.

Ringtail sprang forward, yanking Blackpaw out of range of the lapping waves. "Where's Blackpatch?" He mewed anxiously, his yellow-green eyes wide.

A flickering black shadow seemed to pass through the trees of IslandClan's land territory. The island was so familiar to her, that she could navigate it blind and deaf, as long as she had the scnet of where everything was. It was all so familiar to her as she leaped over fallen trees and logs. She glanced to her side curiously; she had a pursuer. Shaking her head, she almost chuckled aloud. Who would follow a Clan leader and expect not to be seen?
She had almost decided to go back to camp, for it had been on her mind that it was time to make Blackpaw a warrior, when his assessment was finished. But she heard a rueful yowl, so mourning and pain filled that she could not resist going in the direction it came from, Big Claw Island. Her fears of something terrible worsened when she saw Blackpaw floating on the sea when she reached the shore. He touched the bank, and as Jadestar drew closer, she heard his gasped question.
Aware of light-blue eyes on her back, her fur prickled a little. "Because we need you, Blackpaw," She said gently. Rasping her tongue along his neck fur to ensure that he was still breathing, she looked at Big Claw Island warily. "What happened, Blackpaw?" She asked quietly.

Ringtail looked up as Jadestar appeared suddenly. "Blackpatch took Blackpaw out to the Island for his assessment," he answered for the dark apprentice. "The waters are so rough around this time, Blackpatch should have known better! I don't even know where she is." He looked out across the cold blue-gray, green tinged waters with worry.

Jadestar nodded to Ringtail. "So it seems that she is still on Big Claw Island, then... I may be underestimating the currents, but I think I can get over. Stay here with Blackpaw." She launched herself into the water. It was very cold and salty, but she had been raised in IslandClan and swam over in worse currents than this. It had calmed down a bit from when Blackpatch had crossed, but rip tides still riddled the water. The sign to watch out for these was brown or murky water and seaweed. Almost entering one such rip current, Jadestar dragged herself out of the way in time, paws pumping the water furiously. Fighting the current, she finally reached Big Claw Island, stepping onto the shore soaking wet and salty. Shaking out her pelt, she noticed immediately where Blackpatch was, Leafsong nearby. "What happened to her?" She mewed, concerned, until she noticed that the she-cat was not breathing. Sorrow entered her bright-green eyes.

(( x3 Sor-ry! I wanted to help with the OceanClan deadness, and since I had 2 Island-cats, I decided to kill Blackpatch to make room for 'nother kitty. ^^ ))
