Blackpatch led the patrol as she bounded out of the IslandClan camp, with Ringtail, Fogpaw, Pearlpaw and Blackpaw right behind her. She slowed to a walk along the border where the grass from the forest stopped and the pebbly yellow sand began. She glanced back at her companions. "We have an extra large patrol," she commented to Ringtail. "Why don't you take Fogpaw and Pearlpaw up by the forest and OceanClan borders, and I'll go with Blackpaw to Big Claw Island and meet up with you at the border." It would be good experience for Ringtail to be in charge of the younger apprentices, and Blackpaw needed his assessment anyway. "Is that alright with you guys?" Ringtail asked the others.

He halted slowly as Blackpatch stopped, letting his paws gently touch the edge of the sand. "It's fine with me." Blackpaw said with a shrug, a grin still hovering on his face.

Fogpaw could barely contain his excitement of going on patrol. His hind end wouldn't stop shaking as he pounced on a leaf on the ground. Purring as he got it he looked up to Ringtail on what to do next. [/size] |

Ringtail grinned at his friends. "Come on, let's go!" He whirled and loped away up towards the forest.
Blackpatch looked to the oldest apprentice. "Shall we?" She waded into the shallows, feeling the chill of leaf-fall in the water.

"Sure." He agreed solemnly with Blackpatch, his yellow eyes looking out towards Big claw Island. The water was colder than he had hoped when he entered it, but the feeling soon passed. He stretched out his legs as he began wade through the water.

Ringtail stopped where the border divided their half of the forest from OceanClan's. He marked the border with his own scent, and turned, pausing in the shade at the edge of the trees. "I guess OceanClan's been pretty quiet lately," he mused, looking out across the sand.
Blackpatch struck out with her long legs as she began swimming. The water was choppier than usual. She turned to give a warning to Blackpaw. As she did so, a salty wave crashed over her head, pushing her under. She gasped as she came up; the water was freezing cold. The currents yanked at her paws, threatening to pull her beneath the surface again. She felt a bit worried; she was about halfway to the Island already. "Do you want to head back, Blackpaw?"

"If we head back now the current will have a greater chance of sucking us under." Blackpaw called out as wave crashed over his head. He snarled as he pumped his legs and broke the surface again. "We can stay on the island till the current calms down." His voice held strong, his legs and paws pounded through the waves. "We're almost there Blackpatch." He yowled as the island came up even closer. 'Just a little farther.'

"Alri--" Blackpatch's voice cut off as another wave swamped her, filling her mouth and lungs with salty water. She came up coughing, but was shoved down again before she could take another breath. The currents pounded her against sea-floor rocks, slamming her body around like a dead rabbit. She was starting to get scared; it wasn't unheard of for cats to drown in this weather. Lungs bursting for air, she broke the surface. She could feel her body shivering and weakening; the cold from the water was setting in. How much more of this can I take? The undertow yanked her down once more, viciously ramming her head into the sharp, barnacle-encrusted rocks. She started feeling dizzy, unable to think clearly.

"They been too quiet lately I think," Fogpaw said. "Would they be planning about Big Claw Island again?" he asked the older cat. He looked over at the beach and saw no trace of any hunting parties. Something must be going on over in Oceanclan. [/size] |

Blackpaw's eyes widened as he say the she-cat disappear under the water."Blackpatch!" He gasped as he tore down after her, battling the currents as he did so. The salt water stung his eyes as he searched the water for her. He could see a shadow near a cluster of rocks and barncles and he dove down even harder towards it. 'Blackpatch.' He thought silently as he could see the she-cat's familiar brown and black markings. Blackpaw grabbed her scruff firmly between his teeth as he began to swim back towards the surface. His lungs were near to bursting as broke trhe surface. He could see Big Claw Island only a couple of yards away and began to swim even harder in that direction. "We're almost there." He coughed as he began to feel sand under his paws. 'We made it!' The flicker of hope shot through his body as he pulled Blackpath up onto the land.

Ringtail dug something out of his ear with a hind paw. "Maybe . . . I don't really like fighting, but all the same it's been getting on my nerves, all this waiting. And if Taintedstar does succeed, she might start wanting more than just Big Claw Island."
Blackpatch flopped limply on the sand, laying with half her body still in the water. That didn't matter; she couldn't feel anything. She felt as if her head was disconnected from her wet, battered body. Everything was murky, was she still underwater? There was no sting against her eyes, though her tongue felt like sun-baked fresh-kill. Blood was dribbling down her head, mingling with the water flowing down her body.

Nightpaw,who had been hunting in the forest,suddenly saw the IslandClan patrol.Quickly pouncing on the vole he had been watching silently for the past few seconds,he raced out and called his mentor.

"Eh?" Ringtail stood as he heard a call. It was his apprentice Nightpaw. He smiled. "Watch and learn, Fogpaw," he breathed. "Blackpatch showed me this one." Pressing his belly close to the ground he streaked towards the trees, rapidly closing the distance between himself and Nightpaw. He sprang, landing just in front of the younger cat but continuing forward, thus cannoning into the other feline with the force of a stampeding group of hares.

Nightpaw was caught by suprise.Before he knew it,he had already hit a huge rock behind him.He was amazed at the attack."Show me again!" Nightpaw cried excitedly to his mentor.
