Tearing downward in her adrenaline rush, her mind was befuddled with the sights, sounds and scents. It was not a second too soon before Sootpaw realized there a was a sharp bend in the road.
Unsheathing her claws, Sootpaw tried to latch herself onto the ground so she could stop before the was launched off the cliff. A deafening screech filled the silence, as she skidded down the slope. "Damn-- rocks." Sootpaw managed to grunt through bared teeth.
Clenching her eyes in fear, Sootpaw plummeted. Or so she had believed. Rather, she was hanging to the edge of the ledge with a unsheathed claw dug into a crag in the rock. Disallowing herself to whimper, Sootpaw allowed a groundbreaking scream. "ALDERFUR!"

(( I'm so sorry I abandoned you! I didn't want to go but my cousin arrived to spend the night. )) Alderfur felt his heart fall out of his chest as he saw Sootpaw dangling precariously on the edge. With a great leap he hauled himself up onto the ledge opposite her. A quick glance showed there was a crag slightly above the apprentice. He sprang up to it, scrabbling madly until he was balanced. Planting his hindpaws widely and firmly, Alderfur leaned down and grasped Sootpaw with his claws. Digging in and hoping he didn't hurt her, he gave a mighty heave, dislodging her and flinging her up to safetly. But as he turned to follow, one back paw lost it's grip and slipped down. The other soon followed. Alderfur's wail was cut short with a loud thud and a sharp crack. He'd landed in a groove in the uneven, dull ground.

Sootpaw felt Alderfur's claws grasp into her skin. Too scared to whimper or yelp, the tiny cat was flung without resistance. Regaining her breath, the apprentice steadied her heavy panting. Looking up with a crooked smile, Sootpaw gasped as she saw Alderfur's face before he vanished from the edge of the cliff. He fell because of you. He could get hurt-- or even DIE, because of you. Because of you.
Squealing shrilly, Sootpaw gave no second thought, but to leap down. A rash decision, but what could you expect? Angling herself so she wouldn't hit any rocks, the cat plummeted down in a stealthy way as only a cat could.
Landing without further complications, there was a small snap of twigs under her body mass, but other than that-- there was silence. "Alderfur?" Sootpaw called out shakily, a ball of guilt forming in the pits of her abdomen.
All your fault.

Alderfur felt as if every bone in his battered body had shattered. One foreleg was mangled and flopped at an awkward angle. His flank twitched, and he gasped, drawing in a rasping, painful breath. He tried to expand his lungs to call out to Sootpaw, to tell her that he was alive, but all the came out was a choking cry. It hurt to breathe. It hurt to look around. Even his jaw hurt, scraped and bruised where it had struck stone. He sucked in a breath once more, and managed a thin, "I. . m. . fine. . "

Alderfur lifted his head slightly and spat, his yellow eyes sharpening. "Find Sootpaw," he hissed. "Make sure she's okay. Touch me again and you're crowfood." (( Er. . . Goldpaw? Didn't you pass Amberpelt's role to me? ))

(( That's okay. You can continue until we find a spot to switch her over. It'd be kind of awkward right now. )) Alderfur staggered to his feet, yellow eyes blazing. Any other elder his age might have been done for, but the small piece of warrior that still remained in him was out. "Touch me and I'll claw your fur out, you little weed." The fire in his eyes faded, and he slumped back to the ground. "Besides," he mewed ruefully, "I think my number is up. I could never make it back up to camp. I'm an old cat and I've lived my life. I'm ready for StarClan."

Alderfur snorted. "If you always think like that, you're stupider than I give you credit for. I've seen more cats die despite a medicine cat's care than you've had mice, young fellow. And just as I've seen death taking over, so have I witnessed new life, and within that life the spirit of ones long past." He raised his good paw and flicked Rainpaw on the nose, forcing the apprentice to raise his eyes. "There's more to being a medicine cat than just being a whiz with herbs. Medicine cats have to see past differences in Clan life, And you just might be good at that." The old cat snorted once more. "But don't let all that go to your head, or you'll fail completely. Now then, where's Sootpaw? I must speak with her. . . " His voice was beginning to grow quieter.

Alderfur shook his head weakly, staring up at the medicine cat. "Nevermind then. Just, don't forget to tell her. . I've been meaning to, but there wasn't time. . don't forget, please. . . It's...." The old cat broke off, and his stone-gray head lolled back against the rock. His tabby body stiffened, and then went limp. His amber eyes were no longer a bright, shining yellow, but instead had a dull, blank film. The elder was dead. (( Har har. He's DEAD. ))

(( It's too bad I can't play him as a StarClan kitty. Imagine those poor former apprentices he's come back to haunt! XD Maybe I can reincarnate him somehow. . .))
